A benefit of using this type of jack is that the mechanical design allows it to be self-locking. The term self-locking means it will automatically lock when the rotational force on the screw is released. It then will remain in a permanent position until rotational force is once again applied. Manual options include the Sumner “Short Stack” which is a very portable and maneuverable material hoist with enclosed cables and a reach capacity of up to 13’. Standard material lifts will lift 650 lbs to a height of 24’. A second manual option for lighter loads is a portable material lift that reaches up to 12’. These material lifts are great options for shipping/receiving work, for placing heavy materials on shelves, and for HVAC installation or repair.

A hydraulic option is the pallet jack, which allows heavy loads that are placed on top of metal or wooden pallets to be moved with ease. The lever like handle that steers the device pumps and releases hydraulic fluid to raise and lower the jack.
